Enabling next-generation automotive on-board chargers with matrix converters and GaN BDS
The single-stage OBC is an isolated charger topology that rectifies a single AC input to a battery-voltage output for EV charging, leveraging 4-quadrant GaN switches to replace standard two-stage architectures.
Bi-directional HV GaN devices replace the back-to-back structure, enhancing system performance while reducing BoM size and cost, enabling single-stage AC-DC bidirectional power conversion without a PFC inductor or a DC bus capacitor.
In this session, Gabriele Clapier and Marco Ruggeri of Renesas explore how matrix converters and GaN bidirectional switches are enabling more efficient, compact, and cost-effective next-generation on-board chargers.
What you’ll learn:
- How OBC converters will evolve to a single-stage architecture
- Overview of the ideal 4-quadrant switch
- System diagram review
